There are several factors that should be taken into consideration when evaluating the nature of group communication such as status and power (Mhhe.com, 2014). The group members were interrelated since they had similar interests and basic knowledge in the subject in question. I will use the functional theory and symbolic convergence theory to document my group experience in the past week.The functional theory proposes communication as a tool to make decisions and solve problems. The group structure and behavior ensured that everybody in the group was able to air their views to the rest of the group members. Therefore, all the members of the group were able to achieve their individual goals at the end of each session. The group sessions followed a systematic procedure as proposed in the functional theory to help the group members accomplish the set tasks. However, I found that hidden agendas, competing goals, emotions and power were factors in the decisions made during the group session. The symbolic convergence theory suggests that non-verbal cues play an important role in group communication (Mhhe.com, 2014). This was evident in the group sessions since the group members had developed nonverbal messages because we had similar understanding and experiences.
